Many of my fondest memories involve being around the water. As the hot summer months continue, many of us have plans to head to the beach or lake. Here are some safety tips to remember:
- Know the “rules” of the body of water you are on.
- Sunscreen, sunscreen, and sunscreen.
- Your level of fitness is not the same as it was at the end of last swim season; know your ability. Contact your physical therapist if you need help with a work out plan to get back in shape.
- Always swim with a “buddy”.
- Know your surroundings (current, undertow, drop offs).
- Sun and water sports will tire you more easily, so remember to stay hydrated (caffeinated and alcoholic beverages will dehydrate you more). Take breaks.
- If you are in trouble, call or wave for help.
- Wear proper flotation devices if necessary.
- Stretch to avoid cramping and injuries.
- If caught in a rip current, swim sideways to the current until free. Don’t swim against the current’s pull.
Have a great time on the water during the summer months, but always remember to be safe.
Sincerely,
Pam Walkowski, PTA
